Freshman Murdoch tallies seven points as Redmen lacrosse squad spanks Stingers 23-0
MONTREAL Freshman Maxime Murdoch of Westmount, Que., scored three goals and added four assists as the McGill University men's lacrosse team with a resounding 23-0 whitewash over Concordia in the CUFLA season opener for both clubs, at Molson Stadium, Friday.
Murdoch, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound son of head coach Tim Murdoch, tallied in each of the first three periods before being pulled. A product of the Quebec provincial team and IMG Academy in Florida, he was one of 18 different Redmen to score. Senior attackman Rhys Burnell also netted a hat-trick, accomplishing the feat in the opening quarter.
McGill had a 55-5 edge in shots against a struggling Concordia club that fielded only 13 players. The Redmen, considered by many to be the early-season favourite to win the league's Baggataway Cup championship, led 9-0 after the opening quarter, 15-0 at halftime and 20-0 by the end of the third quarter.
The starting defence was pulled after the first quarter, along with senior attackman Rhys Burnell and Spencer Bromley, who led the team in scoring last year (excluding three who were injured).
"We took advantage of the lopsided score to play all 31 players who dressed," said Coach Murdoch, who had three other players sidelined with various ailments. "This game allowed many freshmen to get acclimated and to perform at a high level. It was important that they saw develop as we expect to lose 16 seniors to graduation next spring, including all four co-captains (Rakoczy, Goodwin, Frost, Bjella),
Aside from the two hat-tricks, five players tallied twice, including Jake Gutman, Alex Beckes, Cyrus Wickersham, Shawn Fontaine and James Vickery. Rounding out the scoring with one goal apiece was Anders Bjella, Goose Bolton, Spencer Bromley, Louis-Charles Genereux, Quinton Bradley, Alex Linton and Bohe Hosking.
McGill goalies William Waesche and newcomer Conor Manahan shared the shutout. Waesche started and collected the victory, kicking aside all five shots faced in 40 minutes of work. Manahan played the second half and also made five saves.
Concordia freshman Philippe Carmant of Montreal, was saddled with the loss, making 28 saves while surrendering 23 goals.

Brock lacrosse opens season with 17-14 win over McMaster
HAMILTON, Ont. - The Brock University men's lacrosse team opened the 2015 CUFLA regular season with a 17-14 road victory over the McMaster Marauders Friday night.
Leading the way for the Badgers was Brandon Slade (Orangeville, Ont.) who led all scorers with four goals, highlighted by the 50th goal of his regular season career.
Newcomer Connor Ham (Newmarket, Ont.) contributed with three goals. Nicholas Beaudoin (Welland, Ont.), Nicholas Rybka (Bolton, Ont.), Jake Nyhuus (Oakville, Ont.) and Nick Karam (Whitby, Ont.) all added two goals each while Davis Neal (Orangeville, Ont.) and Jeremy McWatters (Whitby, Ont.) rounded out the scoring with one goal.
Alex Guiney (Toronto, Ont.) recorded the victory in his Badgers debut.
The Badgers will play the Western Mustangs in back-to-back contests next week. Brock will travel to London On September 16th and will host the Mustangs on September 19th at 1pm as part of the new turf field opening and Homecoming weekend.

Grypons drop season opener at Western
London, ON – After winning back-to-back National Championships, the Gryphons suffered a setback in London on Friday night in their opening game of the 2015 season, falling 10-6 to the Western Mustangs. The Gryphons have now lost each of their last four meetings with Western, with their last win over the Mustangs coming back in the 2013 season opener.
Last season, the Gryphons started the season with three straight losses (one via forfeit) before going on to once again be crowned champions of the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association.
Friday night's game marked the first of 12 regular season games for the Gryphons who will open up the home portion of their schedule on Sunday, September 20 when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks.

Perfect opening weekend for Lakers lacrosse
The 2015 CUFLA season kicked off in North Bay this past weekend, as the Nipissing Lakers hosted the Laurier Golden Hawks and Toronto Varsity Blues.
The first two home games and first two games of the year, went very well for the young squad, which is looking to take advantage of a solid foundation put in place last season.
The Lakers were able to come away with two big wins thanks to some solid team play and contributions from everyone in the lineup.
Game 1
Nipissing vs Laurier (W 9-5)
"We controlled the ball through 80 per cent of the first half. We had a lot of missed opportunities and a few too many penalties and as a result it was 3-3 after half. In the second half we really started connecting and ended the game at 9-6. Curtis Perry was good for 4 goals and an assist. Some of our rookies really showed up to play," head coach Sean McKinstry said.
Tanner Poole potted his first CUFLA goal as well as an assist. Doug Utting, a veteran of CUFLA, but a newcomer to the Lakers (western graduate, teachers college now) had a pair of goals and really helped lead the team.
Game 2
Nipissing vs Toronto (W 12-9)
"We had one of the best quarters I've ever seen our team play. We were cool, calm and collected and poised to dominate the game," McKinstry said.
The Lakers were up 6-1 after the first quarter. That's when the penalty trouble really kicked in. Nipissing started playing with a sense of desperation that was not needed considering the score of the game. By the end up the first half Toronto had battled back a bit and was now 8-4 at half.
The penalty trouble continued and by the end of the third, it was a 10-6 lead for the Lakers. In the fourth, the home team managed to rally around the defense and stay out of the box and they cruised to a 12-9 victory.
Kozlowski showed he could contribute, scoring four goals, while Perry, Utting and Poole continued to contribute on offense putting up two tallies apiece. Another rookie, Tyler Goodchild scored his first CUFLA goal as well.
Andrew Dominey, Kyle Weatherall, Genicko Galvan and Brayden Trace all played shut down defense that helped solidify both wins.
Newcomer Scott Dominey was taking the majority of the face offs and won most giving us a chance to hold possession of the ball in both games.
Most importantly our rookie goalie Andrew Wood played his first 2 games in CUFLA. He played fantastic making a lot of clutch saves that kept the Lakers in both of the games.
The Lakers are back at home this weekend, hosting Laurentian on Saturday evening at Veterans Field.
Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Time takes time; uOttawa lacrosse Week 1 Recap
"They were who we thought they were!" asserted Arizona Cardinals Head Coach Dennis Green when speaking about his team's opponents. After week 1, the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees feel these same sentiments.
In game 1, the Gee-Gees lost to the Queen's Gaels 14-6, while handing over a pair of points to the Bishop's Gaiters 14-4 in game 2. Brandon Perras (Cornwall, Ont) lead the team offensively with 5 points over the weekend, while Mike Webster (Ottawa, Ont) and Fjodor Jemcov (Lebanon, NH) were excellent between the pipes.
Games on the opening weekend didnt exactly go to plan score wise, but all is not lost. The team and their staff were not surprised at the talent of the opponents on week 1, but some dissapointment in the consistency of play was evident.
"We weren't able to show much discipline on the offensive end of the field in either games second half." explained Jordan Weedmark, half of the teams offensive coordination unit. "Once we fell back a little bit, we were too quick to hit the panic button- we'll work on it."
The Gee-Gees first half did not mirror their second half in any logical way but the team is confident if they can rectify some small issues they will be able to continue on a path to reaching the level of consistency their staff believes is capable.
"It's unfortunate the scores looked so lopsided. We thought our team played well, though some costly mistakes and some periods of inconsistency cost us." stated Brett Perras. "Our players wear their pride on their sleeves and sometimes that gets us into trouble."
In game 1, U Ottawa was able to take a 5-5 tie going into the second half before losing the second half 9-1, while Sunday's game 2 saw the home side tied 3-3 in the first quarter and down 7-3, within reach at half.
Both Bishop's and Queen's were able to dig deep into playoff runs last season and prove as good measuring sticks for the rookie laden Ottawa team.
"Maturity on the field will come with time. This group of young men are capable of accomplishing positive outcomes if we can add our effort and growing IQ for the field style with some consistency." concluded O-coordinator Jordan Joncas.

Bjella and Bromley net hat-tricks as lacrosse Redmen run over Ravens, extend undefeated streak
MONTREAL Anders Bjella of Milwaukee, Wisc., and Spencer Bromley of Surrey, B.C., each registered hat-tricks as the McGill University men's lacrosse team crushed Carleton 17-7 on a drizzly evening at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday.
The heavily-favoured Redmen, who scored the game's first six goals, led 7-3 after the first quarter, 10-5 at the half and 15-6 after three.
Veteran midfielder Connor Goodwin of New Westminster, B.C., and Maxime Murdoch, a freshman from Westmount, Que., added two apiece.
"We were on fire and came out really strong to build a nice lead but then kind of fell back on our heels in the rain and let them back into the contest," said McGill head coach Tim Murdoch. "But we had a crucial late goal by "Goose" Bolton just seconds before halftime that gave us back the momentum with a 10-5 lead."
Rounding out the scoring with one apiece was Emile Sassone-Lawless of Ithaca, N.Y., Rufus Frost of Park City, Utah, rookie Brendan Mullen of Toronto, Alexander Linton of Ridgewood, N.J., Drew Laird of Chittenden, Vt., Rhys Burnell from Abbotsford, B.C. and the aforementioned Augustus Bolton who hails from Darien, Conn.
All-star netminder William Waesche of Greenwich, Conn., collected the win between the pipes for McGill, improving to 2-0 on the season. Adam Bridle went the distance in net for Carleton and was saddled with the loss.
Cam Breen scored twice for the Ravens, with singles going to Sam Robillard, Bernard Murdock,Andrew MacNeill, Noah Hoselton and Aaron Woods.
Both teams have a quick turnaround, with a return game at Carleton (0-1) on Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m.

Nothing but a good time at the Voyageurs lacrosse season opener
Playing in front of an enthusiastic crowd, the Voyageurs Lacrosse Team started off their season with a game against the Toronto Varsity Blues. Paul Jelley, one of the teams veteran players, started the game with an aggressive win of the opening face-off followed by a separating hit that helped set the tone of the game.
Laurentian was the first team to score, the boys connected well with their passes as Neil McInroy (45) handed it to Patrick Fitzhenry who set up Brad Gerrow to start the scoring. Taking the momentum from their goal, the Voyageurs continued to carry the play for the remainder of the first quarter.
The boys struck again quickly in the second quarter, this time Gerrow set up his teammate Nick Seftel to take a two goal lead. The game began to shift as Toronto felt more pressure to keep up, however they had difficulty getting through Laurentian’s defence. Graeme George striped the Blues offence for a second time, generating a short-handed opportunity. McInroy picked up the ball in his own zone, carried it down the field and scored on a great solo effort. Three to nothing for the Voyageurs.
Laurentian created quality scoring opportunities, whereas the Blues were hardly able to get balls to the net. Just before half time, Laurentian brought their lead to four goals. Doug Bennet carried the ball down the middle and passed to Michael Mayes (97) who faked, shot beneath and past the goaltender.
Toronto came out hard to start the second half, Marc Santos passed to Mitch de Snoo who put his team on the board. The momentum had no time to shift before the Voyageurs knocked another one in their opponents net. Gerrow set up Justin Scheuneman to regain their four-goal lead. Andrew Paton (5), the Blues goaltender made some key saves for his club. De Snoo potted his second goal of the game attempting a Toronto comeback. Laurentian would not allow it, as they did a great job of controlling the play while eating up the clock.
To end the third quarter, Bennet came out from behind the net, drove through the defender to knock in his second of the game. Six goals for Laurentian over the Blues’ two headed into the fourth quarter.
Santos set up de Snoo a second time giving de Snoo as well as Toronto their third goal of the game. The Blues still itched at a comeback, Laurentian needed to shut the door. They had no problem doing so, Cameron Genge placed a nice strip on his opponent. Bennet sniped from the far side, giving his team some cushioning. In addition, Gerrow with his third helper of the game set up Seftel again for Laurentian’s eighth goal. Just before time was to expire, Jelley ran straight out and passed to McInroy, who shot it from the line and straight past Paton.
The final whistle blew with Laurentian topping Toronto by six goals. A great way to start the new season for the Voyageurs, Gerrow stated his excitement for the upcoming season. “Our rookie class showed a lot of promise in the game today. I’m really excited about what we can do to surprise some of the teams in our division this year.”

Bishop’s Gaiters Lacrosse Week 1 Recap
Veteran Mason Austen potted five goals as the Gaiters lacrosse team beat Trent 13-9 to open the 2015 CUFLA Campaign in Peterborough on Saturday night. Bishop's backed that performance up with a dominating 14-4 win over Ottawa on Sunday.
Austen (High River, Alta.) led the way for the offense while the Gaiters were back stopped by goalie David Bigley (New Westminster, B.C.). He made over a dozen saves, some of them the best of his career, as Bishop's kicked the season off on the right foot beating Trent 13-9. Austen found the score sheet a pair of times on Sunday against the Ottawa Gee-Gees as the Gaiters cruised to the 14-4 victory and a 2-0 record after the first weekend of action. Leading the way both days for the Gaiters was James Malloy (Uxbridge, Ont.) who recorded six points in each of the first two contests.
Next up for the Gaiters, they travel west once again to face the Carleton Ravens on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Ottawa and the Queen's Gaels on Sunday at 12 Noon in Kingston.

Timely saves leave Laurentian winless in a tight game with Laurier
After winning their previous game, the Laurentian Voyageurs failed to come up with the victory against the Laurier Goldenhawks, losing an action packed game by a score of 9-8.
The Voyageurs looked to be competing the same way they played the night before as Paul Jelley took the first face-off. With their first shot on net Laurentian took what would be their only lead of the game as Patrick Fitzhenry scored his first goal of the season on the Golden Hawks rookie goaltender.
Laurier was quick to respond, Danton Miller scored and assisted on Connor Bullock’s goal to put his team in the lead. Head coach Derrick Gordon called a timeout, hoping to set the Voyageurs straight on their plan but it was to no avail. Jordan Bennett extended his team’s lead before Miller deposited his second goal of the game. Bryce Mayea got in on the action as well bringing the Golden Hawks lead to four points ahead.
Laurentian’s rookie goalie Jake Kelly was chased out of the net just after the first quarter in his first game. Whereas the Goldenhawks’ rookie in front of the net, Dylan Carr-Matthews, stood tall after the first goal he let in and made a couple key saves to keep his team in the lead.
Ian Walters came in for the remaining time and brought the same quality play he had in his previous game for Laurentian. The compact break between first and second quarters seemed to help the boys as Brad Gerrow passed the ball from behind the net to Nick Seftel who shot it right past Carr-Matthews’ stick.
Laurentian began putting on the pressure, especially Graeme George having another great game all over the field with key strips and big hits that pumped up the Voyageurs bench. However, they could not control Miller who drove straight to the net and potted his third goal. The Voyageurs did not give up as just before half time, Fitzhenry scored a buzzer beater to bring Laurentian back within three with half the game left to play.
Both teams received their fair share of time in their opponent’s zone, Laurentian had some difficulties connecting on their passes. In an attempt to get his squad focused on their shared goal, Jelley could be heard yelling “It’s for the name on the front guys, not the number on the back.” It seemed to spark the boys as Fitzhenry set up a pretty passing play with Seftel, who also scored his second of the game. With just one goal in the third quarter, Laurier was still ahead 6-4.
After being held to a scoreless third quarter by Walters, Bennett scored within the first minute of the fourth for the Golden Hawks. Laurentian started to reconnect with their passes, which led to Seftel scoring his third of the game and Justin Scheuneman squeaking his shot past Carr-Matthews (66).
Miller (4) and Brian Coyne (2) scored two quick goals for Laurier to regain their three-goal lead. The Voyageurs did not back down as Gerrow shot over the goalie’s head for his second in as many games. Nearing the final minute of the game, Fitzhenry scored with intensity, brought his team within one goal and ran off the field to get the next play running. However, that was as close as Laurentian could get as time ran out on their comeback attempt.
The Voyageurs Lacrosse team split their opening weekend with one win and a loss, taking two of a possible four points. The boys now travel to Varsity Stadium on Friday, September 18th and face-off with the Toronto Varsity Blues at 8:30pm.
