McGill wins; CUFLA will have new champions

Hamilton, ON - With a decisive 13-9 semi-final victory over the Brock University Badgers, the McGill University Redmen guaranteed that there will be a new Baggataway Cup Champion in 2008.

Brock has won the last six CUFLA championships and seventeen of the past twenty-three Baggataway Cups, but the day was all Redmen.

McGill extended their 6-4 lead with an explosive third quarter where they scored four unanswered goals. Attackman Luke Lacava led McGill with three goals and two assists, while Jake Safarik, McGill’s UnderArmor Player of the Game had a goal and an assist.

Even more exceptional was the disciplined approach head coach Tim Murdoch brought to his squad; McGill did not take a single penalty in the entire game.

Despite McGill’s lead and dominant play, Brock did not give up. The Badgers continued to press and scored five goals in the fourth quarter. Brock’s scoring was led by Kenny Burst, who had two goals and one assist. Also remarkable was the impressive one-on-one play of defender Reid Acton who made several strong stick checks to rob McGill of many breakaway opportunities.

McGill will play the winner of today’s semi-final game between the University of Guelph Gryphons and the Trent University Excalibur in the Baggataway Cup Final. The CUFLA Championship game will be played tomorrow at 1:00 PM at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton on McMaster University’s campus.
