Spencer Bromley from Surrey, B.C., tallied three goals and registered an assist but it was insufficient as McGill fell 11-7 to the University of Vermont Catamounts, an NCAA Div. 1 program, in men's lacrosse exhibition play, Saturday.
Vermont had a slim 17-14 advantage in shots on net but jumped into a eye-popping 9-0 lead before the Redmen replied. McGill had a better showing after the intermission, outscoring UVM 7-2 in the second half.
The Catamounts roster features senior midfielder Ian MacKay of Port Elgin, Ont., who was has been selected to represent Team Canada at two exhibition games in Denver later this month
"Vermont has a talented team," said head coach Tim Murdoch, who chose to rest several injured players, including starting midfielders Maxime Murdoch, Liam MacDonald and Alexander Linton, as well as freshman Jay Jiranek. "Losing 70 per cent of the faceoffs and allowing UVM to build a huge 9-0 lead made it a major challenge to recover."
Also scoring for the Redmen was Emile Sassone-Lawless of Ithaca, N.Y., with two goals and a helper, in addition to Rhys Burnell of Abbotsford, B.C., and Goose Bolton of Darien, Conn.
McGill also started backup netminder Conor Manahan, a 6-foot, 160-pound engineering sophomore from Victoria, B.C., who allowed nine goals on 11 shots through the first half. He was replaced by all-conference netminder William Waesche of Greenwich, Conn., who stopped four of six shots in the second half.
McGill, which dropped to 7-3 overall, including a 7-1 mark in league play, will host last-place Carleton (1-8) at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15 at Percival Molson Stadium. The upcoming weekend, which will be the team's Homecoming, will also feature an alumni game on Saturday at 2 pm, preceding the varsity game against Carleton.
