Lakers and Gaiters Week 6 wins set up third-place showdown in CUFLA East

2016-10-18

Nipissing and Bishop's play each other twice to wrap up the season with third place in CUFLA East on the line, although Queen's and Ottawa are still part of the race for playoff positioning heading into Week 7.

The Bishop's Gaiters and Nipissing Lakers both won their games in Week 6 of the 2016 CUFLA season to set up a battle for third place and home field advantage in the playoffs.

Nipissing (4-6) exploded in the fourth quarter to overcame a one-goal deficit and beat Ottawa 15-7 Friday night. Bishop's swept a pair of games in the nation's capital, beating Ottawa 17-13 on Saturday and Carleton 12-8 on Sunday to improve to 5-5.

Nick Chaykowsky and Scott Dominey each had 4 points in the Lakers' 9-0 fourth quarter. Chaykowsky's 2 goals and 2 assists in the quarter gave him 3 goals and 4 assists overall to lead all scorers. Dominey scored three times in the fourth to push his totals for the game to 5 goals and 1 assist.

For Bishop's, a trio of players had huge weekends in their sweep. Eric Mawdsley scored 8 goals, Andrew Neilsen 6 goals and 2 assists, and Rhett Handley 3 goals and 4 assists.

Now the teams will meet for games this Saturday and Sunday at Bishop's Coulter Field. There's plenty on the line. A Bishop's win in either game would give them a good chance to clinch third place while two wins would assure them of third. Nipissing would put themselves in the driver's seat for third place if they can win both games.

Queen's is still in the mix in the tight middle of the pack in the CUFLA East standings, currently sitting tied with Nipissing at 4-6 and one game ahead of 3-7 Ottawa. The Lakers hold the head to head tiebreaker over the Gaels by virtue of having outscored Queen's 22-18 when the teams split their season series.

Things could get really interesting if Queen's and Bishop's wind up tied after the regular season wraps up this weekend. The teams each scored 21 goals in splitting their season series. Queen's would have to beat both 9-1 McGill and 3-7 Ottawa this weekend while Bishop's and Nipissing split for the Gaels and Gaiters to wind up tied. If that happened, both teams would be 6-6 and organizers would have to reach deeper into the list of tiebreakers to determine third place.

A potential complication also awaits if Ottawa can pull off a sweep of its games this weekend. Since the Gee-Gee's beat Queen's on September 10, a pair of Ottawa wins over McGill and Queen's would make things really interesting in terms of tiebreaker scenarios.

Ottawa could move into a tie or ahead of both Queen's and Nipissing or into a tie with Bishop's. Suffice it to say, there are plenty of possibilities that could arise from Week 7 action. Keep track of how everything unfolds via Twitter @CUFLAlacrosse and the results page of our web site

All the final results and playoff matchups will be revealed here on the CUFLA home page once everything is finalized. It should be an exciting final weekend of action.
