The Trent University women's team won the school's first lacrosse championship last week, downing Western to take the OUA title. The men's Excalibur will try to follow suit with a CUFLA title and they head to St. Catharines next weekend as the East's first seed after downing Nipissing 17-11 in qualifying action Saturday

The Lakers scored the game's first goal 5:14 in but Trent responded with the next five goals and ran out to an 8-3 lead by the end of the first quarter. Trent led 10-6 at half time and got three goals in the first five minutes of the third quarter to pretty much put the game away, although a three-goal spurt by Nipissing kept things interesting.

Garrett Eddy was a force for the Excalibur with 5 goals and an assist. Middie Danny Michel added a hat trick for Trent. Their defence did a solid job of containing the East's leading scorer, holding Nipissing star Nick Chaykowsky to one goal and two assists. Alex DeGagne led the Lakers with 3 goals and an assist and Doug Utting chipped in with a hat trick.

With McGill being upset by Ottawa Saturday, Trent becomes the East's top seed and advances straight to the Baggataway Cup semifinal Saturday at 1 pm Saturday, where they will face the winner of Friday's quarterfinal between Brock and Ottawa.

Bishop's will be playing in the other quarterfinal Friday after downing Queen's 12-10 Saturday. Joel Wright was the top gun for the Gaiters with four goals. Cam Bateman and Andrew Neilson each added two goals and an assist.

Bishop's will face Guelph at 8 pm Friday night in St. Catharines.
