Bishop's stuns McGill 12-11 in 3OT on Samuel Firth's sixth goal of the game to energize the battle for first place in CUFLA East.Courtesy McGill Athletics
Freshman Samuel Firth of Ottawa busted loose for six goals, including the sudden-victory winner in triple overtime as Bishop's toppled the McGill Redmen 12-11 in a Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association thriller before a Homecoming crowd of about 500 on Coulter Field, Thursday.
The victory, Bishop's fourth straight to start the 2017 campaign, was also their first against McGill since 2012. For the Redmen, the loss was their first blemish of season as they fell to 5-1. Bishop's now remains as the lone undefeated team in the CUFLA East.
Goose Bolton of Darien, Conn., netted four markers for the Redmen but it was all in vain.
McGill, which entered the game as the highest scoring the team in the CUFLA East and the second-best offence in the entire 14-team league, was held to just three goals in the first half. The teams were tied at 2-2 after the opening quarter, but BU led 4-3 at halftime and 7-4 after three quarters. McGill came-from-behind to outscore the Gaiters 4-1 and force overtime at 8-8. The Redmen took that momentum into the two-period overtime session and promptly score three times to take a commanding 11-8 lead. But BU rallied for tie the contest at 11-11, setting the stage for Firth's heroics with one second remaining in sudden-death.
"It was an interesting game because we didn't shoot well in the first half. We were getting the opportunities but weren't converting," said McGill head coach Tim Murdoch. "Scoring three times in the first half is not going to do it against a solid team like Bishop's. And after we erased a three-goal deficit to go ahead by three in overtime, I think that we were too complacent for the rest of the overtime."
Also scoring for McGill was rookie Patrick Brandell with two, plus Ian Macleod, Brendan Mullen, Maxime Murdoch and Emile Sassone-Lawless.
Rounding out the scoring for Bishop's was Simon Winquist,a native of Sherbrooke, Que., and son of former McGill hockey grad
Todd Winquist, who tallied two goals. Singles went to
Devlin Kauffeldt and
Sam Fontaine.
McGill, now 5-1, has to regroup quickly as they will host third-place Trent (3-1) at Percival Molson Stadium on Saturday as part of their own Homecoming Weekend. The Redmen will scrimmage against their alumni on Sunday at 1 p.m. on Forbes Field, just north of Molson Stadium.
"It looks like a true three-way race now for first place in the division between us, Bishop's and Trent," added Murdoch, who was philosophical about suffering what appeared to be a heart-breaking loss."We'll learn some lessons from this one as the guys have a long bus ride back to reflect on this game."
Bishop's hits the road next weekend, when they face Trent in Peterborough, Ont. on Sept. 30 and Queen's (1-3) in Kingston, Oct. 1
