Carleton Takes 10-8 Win Over Nipissing Saturday

Things are getting tight at the bottom of the East Division as the Carleton Ravens posted a 10-8 win against the visiting  Nipissing Lakers on a hot day in Ottawa on Saturday.

 

Ravens’ Coach Forster, looking for a way to spark the offense, made a few changes in his lineup, moving rookie Steven Portelli to attack and dropping rookies Hunter Randell and Ryan Vipond to D-middies. The changes paid off as the Ravens looked much more balanced throughout the game.

 

The Lakers jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Scott Dominey beat Carleton’s All-Canadian goalie Simon Bellamy on the doorstep. The Ravens responded with a beautiful cross-crease dish from rookie Steven Portelli to Nick Penteluke who put the ball into a gaping net to end the first quarter at 1-1.

 

The Ravens pushed out front on a bullet by veteran Ty Logan. The Ravens scored again of the draw with Noah Hoselton feeding Steven Portelli on the crease for the rookie’s first CUFLA goal. Nipissing’s Tanner Poole netted his first of the day in response to close the gap to 3-2. Hoselton and Portelli connected again in a nice two man play for Portelli’s second of the game. The Ravens’ Matt Klassen followed up with a solo effort to push the lead to 6-2 before the Lakers’ Scott Dominey replied for a 6-3 score at the half.

 

Hoselton opened the second half with an outside bomb on a feed from Logan. Riley Sloan replied for the Lakers from the stack as the teams traded goals. The Ravens’ veteran midfielder ended the third quarter with two solo efforts to push the Ravens’ lead to 8-4.

 

Ty Logan opened the fourth with his second of the day on a beautiful individual effort stripping a Laker on a clear with a hard hit, grabbing the loosie and scoring a beauty in the bottom corner on the run to finish the play. The Lakers Sam Rooney replied with a snipe off Scott Dominey’s laser feed to make it a 9-5 game. Noah Hoselton slithered through the Laker defense before paying with a crushing hit as he put the ball past Lakers’ keeper Joseph McMahon to make it 10-5. The Lakers bore down to make the game close with three final goals from Nick Chaykowsky and Tanner Poole who completed his hat trick with the last two goals of the game.

 

With the win, the Ravens move to 1-3 on the season and find themselves tied with the Lakers and the Gaels. The Ravens play Queens in Kingston on 24 September and look to keep improving. The Lakers head home to face Ottawa next Saturday.
