The Ottawa Gee'Gees needed a win Monday night to give themselves a chance to control their own destiny heading into the final week of the CUFLA season. They got it with a dominating 14-6 effort over the Carleton Ravens.By Robert Hoselton
It was a tale of two teams Monday night as the Ottawa Gee-Gees played host to the Carleton Ravens. The Gee-Gees are looking to take a step closer to earning a spot in the postseason while the Ravens went into the game hurt, struggling and hoping to put a game together to dash the hopes of their crosstown rivals.
It was quickly obvious that the Gee-Gees’ dynamic duo of Fred Hartley and Spencer Corkery were on a mission. Corkery, who has put together an incredible year, was unstoppable scoring on an outside bomb on his first shot of the game. The Ravens managed to respond on a beautiful whip around shot by Nick Penteluke in the stack on a hard feed from Cam Breen. Corkery replied with his second of the game before Hartley scored to end the first quarter 4-1 for Ottawa.
The second quarter showed more of the same with the Ravens wasting a dominating performance at face off by Andrew Bortolus. Corkery picked up his hat trick goal before Ryan Vipond responded off the draw, scooping up a ground ball and taking it to the net for the rookie’s first CUFLA goal. Ottawa’s Scott Taylor, who had a strong game, chipped in his first goal in answer. Corkery scored again on a feed from Taylor to make the score 6-2 before Carleton’s Hayden Cummings slashed through the defense to make it 6-3 Ottawa at half.
The Gee-Gees came out strong in the third with another quick goal off the stick of Keith Lee. Ottawa took advantage of a string of seven consecutive Ravens penalties to pad their lead with man-up goals from Corkery, Taylor and Liam Brechin. Taylorwho had a 3 goal, 2 assist nightadded an even strength goal. The Ravens managed a shortie off Cummings for his second and a man-up goal from their shifty pre-law middie Matt Klassen. Ottawa led at the end of the third, 11-5.
More penalty trouble for the Ravens in the fourth led to three more man-up goals for the Gee-Gees off the sticks of Jeff Brett, Corkery and David Ouellette — the second-year player potting his first CUFLA goal to the cheers of his teammates. The Ravens' Matt Klassen rounded out the scoring on a sidearm bouncer. Make the final 14-6 for Ottawa who, riding Corkery’s outstanding night of six goals and four assists, have placed themselves nicely in the playoff picture.
Going into the season’s final weekend, the Ravens look to finish out their season hosting McGill Saturday before travelling to Bishop’s Sunday morning. The Gee-Gees (4-7) are in a battle with Nipissing (3-7) for the final spot in the east. They take on Bishop’s on Saturday. Nipissing, who beat Ottawa in both their head-to-head matches this season, hold their fate in their own hands and will play a pair of games against Queen’s Saturday and Sunday.
