McGill downed Carleton 18-5 on the last Saturday of the 2017 CUFLA regular season.By Robert Hoselton
With first place in the standings already secured, McGill ventured to Ottawa Saturday to face the Carleton Ravens looking to maintain their momentum and get valuable playing time for some of their younger players.
Redmen mainstays William Waesche, Goose Bolton and Bohe Hosking were left on the bench to cheer on their mates but McGill was still able to run off to an 18-5 win.
Meanwhile the Ravens, out of the playoff picture, looked to continue to build their systems and chemistry for next season.
The Ravens have been anything but consistent in 2017. Moments of brilliance have been followed by unaccountable and disappointing breakdowns. Coming in against the Redmen, the Ravens’ goal was to bring a consistent game. In the first half, they did indeed give their all against the Redmen.
McGill started quickly on a crafty goal by Colton Campbell coming out of X. Rookie Quinn Tucker, starting the game for the Ravens, made a number of impressive saves against the Redmen’s outside shooters before Carleton’s Hayden Cummings responded with a quick stick goal on a feed from Cam Breen to tie the score at 1-1.
McGill answered off the faceoff to regain the lead on a goal by Cyrus Wickersham. Cal Callahan followed up for McGill to make the score 3-1 before Cummings replied with his second, slashing through the Redmen defence to make it 3-2. Redmen Matt Keresteci made it 4-2 before the end of the first in what was proving to be an unexpectedly tight match.
McGill’s Brendan Byrne and Kieran McKay scored well into the second to push the Redmen to 6-2 when Matt Klassen, moved to offence this year, scored his ninth goal of the 2017 campaign on the power play. Callahan replied for the Redmen to make it 7-3 before Noah Hoselton ripped one from the top past Redmen keeper David Pelliccione. Raven rookie Nick Ayoub scored from outside on the power play to make the score 7-5 at half.
Taking advantage of an illegal stick call, the Redmen ripped three power play goals, pouring it on to break the Ravens’ spirit on goals by Patrick Turner, Naoll Degife, and Callahan’s hat trick goal. Callahan soon added his fourth of the day and Turner added his second to finish the third 12-5.
The Ravens had no response on offence in the second half as McGill continued to pour it on scoring six more in the fourth — three power play goals from Sean Tan, Hunter Zawada and McKay’s second of the day. Tan, Degife and Turner scored to make the final 18-5 in what was literally a game of two halves.
The Ravens look to finish their 2017 campaign against Bishop’s on Sunday while McGill return home to wait to see who they will host in the first round of the playoffs.
