Week 2 Roundup: Gaels Turn the Tables in Big Win over Gaiters

What a turnaround for the Queen's Gaels. Eight days after falling 8-2 to the Bishop's Gaiters in Lennoxville, the Gaels played host to the Gaiters and scored a resounding 16-9 win. 

Queen's got off to a strong start, responding to Eric Mawdsley's opening goal for Bishop's with five straight to take a 5-1 lead after the first quarter. Angus Rawding scored the final two goals of the quarter in the last 1:25, en route to his total of 4 goals and 2 assists.

Chris Boushy led the Gaels with 5 goals and 2 assists. A pair of his goals were critical to Queen's maintaining its lead in the second quarter as they were sandwiched around a four-goal run by the Gaiters. While Bishop's outscored Queen's 4-3 in the second, the Gaels replied with a 4-3 third quarter that put them in good position entering the final 20 minutes with a 12-8 lead. Queen's closed out the game with a 4-1 fourth to improve to 2-2 on the season, tying them with Bishop's but giving them the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Gaiters.

Mawdsley and Samuel Firth each had hat tricks for the Gaiters while Joel Wright added 2 goals and 2 assists.

Elsewhere around CUFLA in Week 2, Brock opened its season with a pair of wins that couldn't have looked much more different. The Badgers throttled Laurier 21-5 at home on Saturday. Then on Sunday, it took three fourth-quarter goals to overcome the Guelph Gryphons for a 9-8 road win.

Kurtis Woodland and Tyrus Rehanek, fresh off capturing the Founders Cup Canadian Jr B box lacrosse championship with the Elora Mohawks, led the way offensively for the Badgers. Woodland had 4 goals and Rehanek 5 assists. Zachery Luis had 4 goals to pace the Gryphons.

Western and Trent also opened their seasons and both reinforced their appearance as Baggataway Cup contenders with big wins. The Mustangs hammered Laurentian 23-2. The Excalibur faced traditionally more competitive foes but still came away with a pair of wide winning margins.

Trent used a balanced attack to down Bishop's 13-6 Saturday and Nipissing 21-10 Sunday. Nine different players had multi-goal games during the weekend while middie Nick Finlay hasn't scored a goal yet but is second on the team with 6 assists. The Excalibur added former CUFLA East scoring champion and two-time first-team All-Canadian Nick Chaykowsky, who is attending teacher's college at Trent. He makes an already solid roster that much more impressive. Scott Dominey continued his dominant performance for Nipissing. The 2017 CUFLA East scoring champ had 50 goals last fall and after scoring six against Trent he already has 15 through three games in 2018.
