McGill got hat tricks from three different players to remain unbeaten at 6-0 with a 13-7 win over Bishop\'s Thursday in Lennoxville.-- Andrew Chase of Summit, N.J., scored three times, including the winner, and added a pair of assists as the McGill men's lacrosse team spoiled the start of homecoming week at Bishop's with a 13-7 road victory on Coulter Field in CUFLA East action, on Thursday.
Maxime Murdoch of Westmount, Que., and Patrick Turner of Stouffville, Ont., also netted hat-tricks for the Redmen, who sit atop the division at 6-0. The win streak is half way to the school record set during a magical run in 2015, when the Redmen went 12-0 in league play en route to winning the CUFLA championship.
McGill, which leads the 14-team league with 83 goals in six games, has now registered 11 hat-tricks, three of them by Murdoch.
The six-goal spread was McGill's largest margin of victory over the Gaiters. The Redmen never trailed and scored six unanswered goals after Bishop's tied the score at 5-5 in the second quarter. A late tally gave McGill a 6-5 lead heading into intermission but then a 5-0 third quarter all but put the game out of reach, followed by a 2-2 deadlock in the final stanza.
"It's always a tough environment down there with a noisy, hostile crowd," said McGill head coach Tim Murdoch. "But we had a good start, built a nice lead early on (3-0), then kind of had a shaky second quarter but a strong second half. I think part of that strong second half is the result of the character that we built with three very close games to start the season."
Rounding out the scoring for McGill, with one goal apiece, was Kieran McKay of Richmond, B.C., Seth Obadia of Port Washington, N.Y., Colton Campbell of Boulder, Col., and Hunter Zawada of Kimberley, B.C.
For the Gaiters, Mathew Paterson of Pte. Claire, Que., also tallied a hat-trick. Others to find the back of the net for the Gaiters were Gabriel Chamberlain of Roberts Creek, B.C., Xavier Perron of Sherbrooke, Que., Joel Wright of Newmarket, Ont., and Thomas Bakeeff of Dartmouth, N.S.
The shots were tied at 19-19, with Michael Gallo, an architecture junior from Glen Rock, N.Y., making a dozen saves to collect the win. His counterpart, Matthew Wolf was only able to muster six saves in a losing cause.
Mcgill had another productive game in the faceoff department, winning 18 of 23 for a sparkling success rate of 78.3 per cent. Gardie Herr won 11 of 14, while Julian Smith-Voudouris was 5-for-7 and Quentin Norris was 2-for-2.
The loss drops Bishop's to 3-4 and leaves them fourth in the CUFLA East, six points behind McGill.The Gaiters' next regular season game is a rematch against the Redmen in Montreal, on Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. Before then BU will play a pair of exhibition contests in the U.S. over Thanksgiving weekend.
McGill will now focus on their annual lacrosse homecoming, with close to 30 alumni expected to suit up for a Saturday (Sept. 29) matinee exhibition against the Redmen freshmen and sophomores. The event also involves a team brunch with the alumni and a career mentoring session.
After this weekend, McGill heads south of the border on Oct.6 to play Dartmouth and Vermont in a doubleheader at Hanover, NH.
REDMEN RAP: McGill was missing the services of three regulars, including Cougar Kirby of Kahnawake, Que., whose girlfriend gave birth to a baby girl earlier in the week... Other lineup scratches included midfielders Naoll Degife and sophomore Scotty Bauer, who both suffered undisclosed injuries during practice on Fruday.
