McGill Will Host the 2019 Baggataway Cup

2019-04-05

McGill University will be the host for the 2019 Baggataway Cup championship.

The Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association announced on Friday that McGill University has won a bid to host the 2019 Baggataway Cup, the 35th annual national championship.

The six-team tournament, scheduled for Nov. 8-10 in Montreal, will be played on the artificial surface at Percival Molson Stadium. Ticket information will be announced in September. It will mark the second time that McGill has won a bid to host the event, although the University previously hosted part of the 2005 tourney when a snowstorm in Lennoxville, Que., forced one semifinal game to be moved to the McGill campus. The University, which previously hosted the event in 2013, has reached the national final five times, winning the Cup in 2012 and 2015.

“CUFLA is proud to partner with McGill University to bring our signature event back to the historic home of our great game,” said CUFLA commissioner David Fenicky.

Since earning varsity status in 2008, the McGill men's lacrosse team has emerged as a national power, winning eight CUFLA East pennants, two national championships and compiling an overall record of 181-86-2, for a .677 winning percentage.

“I’m thrilled that we have won the bid to host this championship,” said McGill head coach Tim Murdoch, a tireless promoter of the sport who has guided his team to a 181-86-2 record in 269 contests overall since taking over the program in 2003. “Montreal and McGill have played a key role in the development of this sport, which was originally known as the ‘Creator’s Game’. We are honoured that the CUFLA membership has chosen us as the host site and plan to run a first-class event.”

Founded in 1985, the CUFLA is now a 14-team conference, featuring a dozen teams in Ontario and two in Quebec. The regular season features a 10-game fall schedule, followed by two weekends of post-season play, culminating with the Baggataway Cup tournament.

The format will feature two quarter-finals on a Friday night (Nov. 8), two semifinals on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 9) and the Baggataway Cup final on Sunday (Nov. 10).
