Week 7: Toronto downs Guelph; showdowns loom for first in both divisions

Toronto beat Guelph in Week 7, setting up the possibility of the Blues playing host to a playoff game, while the top two teams in each division are set to battle for first place in Week 8.

Last fall, the Toronto Varsity Blues played host to the Baggataway Cup. That meant that they had a direct bye to the tournament despite finishing fourth in the West at 4-6, two games behind the Guelph Gryphons.
This year, the Blues have given themselves a chance to make it back to the Baggataway through the front door after a 5-4 win over Guelph in Week 7. To do so, it would help if they can keep their three-game winning streak alive for one more contest: if Toronto can down 3-5 Laurier next Sunday in the final game of the CUFLA regular season, they will play host to the Gryphons in the playoffs the following week. A loss means Toronto could finish as low as fifth, which would likely mean facing three-time defending champion Western in the playoff.

Below are the full Week 7 results followed by a rundown on where each team stands heading into the final week of the regular season.

West Division (Six teams make playoffs)
Brock (7-0)
The Badgers have a bit of an odd double-header to play in Week 8. Their Friday, September 13 game at McMaster was halted because of lightning with Brock leading 4-1 a little under half way through the second quarter. The game will be completed following the regularly scheduled game in St. Catharines this Saturday.
If Brock wins either of those games they will be assured of first place in the West, although they could clinch Friday by sweeping the season series with Western. Brock beat the Mustangs 12-4 on October 10.

Western (7-2)
Even a win on Friday won't do much to save Western's chances of getting first place. The Mustangs would need to beat Brock by more than 8 goals by which they lost to the Badgers earlier, then hope that McMaster can pull off an upset of Brock. A win by fewer than 8 would still give Western a chance, but then they'd need Mac to beat the Badgers twice on Satuday.

Guelph (6-4)
Guelph playoff opponent and location are entirely out of their hands. See below.

Toronto (5-4)
If the Blues beat Laurier, they finish third and play host to Guelph in the Baggataway play-in round the following week because Toronto won their only regular season meeting with the Gryphons. More on Toronto's situation in the Laurier synopsis, next.

Laurier (3-5)
If the Golden Hawks beat McMaster on Friday, they set up an interesting game in Toronto on Sunday. A Blues win would give them third (and they would host fourth-place Guelph). A Hawks win would leapfrog them ahead of Toronto into fourth and earn them a trip to play third-place Guelph.
That would leave Toronto fifth and force them to play the second-place team.

McMaster (2-5)
McMaster plays Laurier Friday then the double header with Brock Sunday. If they won all three games, the Marauders could potentially catch Toronto, although they would still finish in fifth behind the Blues because they lost twice head to head.
The odds against a Mac sweep are probably fairly long; it would mean winning more games in one weekend than they've won in a full season since 2015.

Laurentian (0-10)
The Voyageurs are out of playoff contention.

East Division (McGill has automatic entry to Baggataway Cup as host, four other teams make playoffs)

McGill (8-0) and Trent (8-1)
The winner of the game between the two teams at Trent on Saturday will finish first, the loser will finish second. McGill beat Trent by a single goal in September in Montreal but Trent has a better goal differential, so any Trent win would give them top spot for the second straight year.

Nipissing (6-4)
The Lakers will finish third and play host to the fourth-place team in the Baggataway Cup play-in round.

Bishop's (4-5)
The Gaiters play host to Queen's Sunday in a game that will determine fourth and fifth place. The fourth place team will travel to Nipissing to play the Lakers in the Baggataway Cup playoffs, the fifth place team will travel to the second place finisher for the playoffs.

Queen's (3-5)
The Gaels' Saturday game against winless Carleton is irrelevant to Queen's. Because Queen's beat Bishop's earlier in the year, a win Sunday will either move them a game ahead of the Gaiters or into a tie with the Gaiters, in which case they will have the head to head tiebreaker.

Ottawa (1-8)
If Carleton loses to McGill (Tuesday) and Queen's (Saturday), the Gee-Gees can clinch sixth by beating the Ravens Sunday or losing to them by fewer than the 8 goals by which they beat Carleton in September. They are already eliminated from playoff contention.

Carleton (0-7)
Wins over either or both of McGill and Queen's would mean Carleton would just have to beat Ottawa Sunday to take sixth. Losses to both McGill and Ottawa would cause the Ravens to need to beat the Gee-Gees by more than 8 goals. They are already eliminated from playoff contention.
