Excalibur Slay Gryphons, Advance to Baggataway Cup Semifinals

Trent beat Guelph 11-5 in the first quarterfinal of the Baggataway Cup in Montreal.

Cole McWilliams of Peterborough, Ont., scored four goals and added an assist as the No.2-seeded Trent Excalibur defeated Guelph 11-5 in the opening quarter-final game at the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association championship tournament, Friday.

The game was played in sub-zero temperatures on the artificial surface of Percival Molson Stadium, which was lightly dusted with snow.

Trent advances to a semifinal on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Brock, the top seed in the West Division, which had a first-round bye. The other semi, slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday at Molson Stadium, will feature Western taking on McGill, the top-seeded squad in the East Division. Western advanced after a 12-5 quarter-final victory over Nipissing in Friday’s late game.

Trent, which never trailed in their opener, jumped into a 3-0 lead and were comfortably ahead 3-1 after the opening stanza. They led 5-2 at halftime and 7-4 after three quarters, then stepped on the gas and outscored the gryphons 4-1 down the stretch.

Also scoring a hat-trick for the Excalibur was Garrett Eddy of Bowmanville, Ont., who was credited with the game-winner, just moments into the third quarter.

Rounding out the scoring for the winning side, with one goal apiece, was Cole HanrahanAdam KitchenCheeto Andreoli and Nick Chaykowsky.

Mark Wilson, a midfielder from Toronto, paced the
Guelph attack with a pair of markers. Also striking singles were Mike BergerMitchell Ogilvie and James Short.

Goaltender Dylan Munro of Toronto, registered the win between the pipes for Trent, while Hayden Walsh on Burlington, Ont., took the loss for Guelph. The shots on goal were not available.
