Cody Ward of St. Catharines, Ont., tallied seven points, including four goals as the second-seeded Western Mustangs defeated lower-seeded Nipissing 12-5 in the second  quarter-final at the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association championship tournament, Friday.

The game was played in freezing temperatures on a snow-dusted Percival Molson Stadium.

Western advances to a semifinal on Saturday at 1 p.m. against host McGill, the top-seeded squad in the CUFLA East Division, which is undefeated (10-0) and had a first-round bye. Saturday’s other semi, slated for 11 a.m. at Molson Stadium, will feature Trent taking on Brock, the top-seeded squad in the West Division. Trent advanced after an 11-5 quarter-final victory over Guelph in Friday’s tourney opener.

Western, which led only 1-0 after the opening quarter, quickly stretched that to 5-0 by the midway mark of the second quarter. They took a 6-2 advantage into halftime, then doubled Nipissing 4-2 and 2-1 over the final two stanzas.

Cole Davis, a 6-foot-2 midfielder from Halifax, added a second hat-trick for the Mustangs. Teammates Nik Farrus of Edmonton and Julian Simeoni from Sudbury each struck pay dirt twice. The other Western marker was tallied by Rowan Maclachlan of Toronto.

Bo Peltier, a 5-foot-10, 190-pound attackman from North Bay, Ont., paced the Lakers with three goals in a losing effort. Other marksmen included Tanner Poole of Barrie, Ont., and Riley Sloan from Ottawa.

Goaltender Michael Orlando of Toronto was credited with the victory, while Andrew Wood of St. Thomas, Ont. took the loss.

Box score: Western 12, Nipissing 5
