Nic Soubry Named McGill Head Coach, Replacing Retiring Tim Murdoch

McGill announced Nic Soubry as its new head coach, replacing the retiring Tim Murdoch, as well as handing out season awards at the team's year-end banquet.

Nicolas Soubry was introduced as the new head coach and goaltender Michael Gallo of Glen Rock, N.J., was named most valuable player to highlight the annual McGill University men's lacrosse awards gala, held Saturday at the Delta Hotel in downtown Montreal.

Other major awards were handed out to Maxime Murdoch (most outstanding graduating senior) of Westmount, Que., Tanner Baldin (most dedicated player) of Brantford, Ont., David Van Hees (most improved player) of Oakville, Ont., Evan Reynolds (most sportsmanlike player) of Adelaide, Australia, Roland Moellenberg (most physical player) of Boulder, Col., and Kerry Kane (most outstanding freshman) of Kahnawake, Que.

Soubry, born in Arthabasca, Que., but raised in Oakville, Ont., replaces long-time bench boss Tim Murdoch, who has stepped down after a 17-year coaching tenure with a record of 190-88-2 in 280 contests overall, winning nine CUFLA East pennants and two national championships (2012 and 2015).

Fluently bilingual, Soubry is a former McGill player who has served as an assistant coach with the team since 2015. He transferred to McGill for a PhD in 2014 after graduating from the NCAA's Sacred Heart University. A 6-foot-1, 200-pound defender during his playing days, Soubry is in the final stages of completing his doctorate in biology. He holds a Level 2 license from the National Coaching Certification Program and also served behind the bench of The Edge lacrosse program in Toronto (2010-2012), the Longueuil Patriotes junior team (2015-2017) and the Longueuil Centurions bantam squad (2019). Last year, Soubry also served as director of box lacrosse education in Westmount, Que.

Soubry's first order of business as new bench boss was to announce his slate of captains for the 2020 season. The leadership group included two returning co-captains Oliver Bolsterli and Tanner Baldin, along with Kai McDonaldAndrew Chase and Matthew Gorman.

Nine graduating seniors were presented with a hand-crafted wooden lacrosse stick, made by Travis Gabriel of the Kanesatake Mohawk Territory, as a souvenir of their time at McGill. The group included Michael GalloMaxime Murdoch, along with Naoll DegifeIan MacleodBrendan MullenQuentin NorrisPaul RougeauJulian Smith-Voudouris and goalkeeper David Pelliccione.

The soirée capped off a bittersweet season for the McGill lacrosse program, which finished with a 10-2 record overall, including a perfect 10-0 first-place finish in the CUFLA East, before falling 6-5 to Western in a national semifinal.

Michael Gallo, a 5-foot-11, 160-pound netminder, has won Team MVP honours for the second straight season. The 21-year-old architecture senior posted a perfect 7-0 regular season record this year with a 5.80 goals-against average and was named to the all-tournament team at the 2019 Baggataway Cup championship.

Maxime Murdoch, a co-captain and son of head coach Tim Murdoch, received the team's Baggataway Award, which goes to the graduating senior who has accomplished the most on the field and in the lacrosse community. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound attackman ranks as the seventh-leading scorer in McGill history with 148 points, including 88 goals in 61 games overall. During his youth, he spent four seasons with the team as a ball boy and four years as a videographer. Aside from his role as a captain, the 23-year-old served as a team's marketing liaison to McGill Athletics and was a representative on the Varsity Sports Council. The fifth-year senior will graduate in the spring with an arts degree, majoring in North American Studies.

Tanner Baldin, a 5-foot-10, 160-pound long-stick midfielder, is a repeat winner of the Evans Huber Memorial Award as most dedicated player. One of the team's co-captains, the 22-year-old civil engineering senior merited all-conference honours in the CUFLA East Division and tallied five points, including four goals, in nine contests.

David Van Hees, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound defender, was voted as the returning player who showed the most improvement. The 19-year-old economics sophomore earned a starting role this season and suited up in nine of the team's 10 league games.

Evan Reynolds, a six-foot, 185-pound midfielder, wins the Sportsmanship Award. The 21-year-old chemical engineering junior came off the bench to score two goals and added three assists with only three penalty minutes in eight conference games. He maintained an extremely positive attitude and was a constant source of encouragement to his teammates.

Roland Moellenberg, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound defender, wins the Bell Ringer Award as the most physical player. The 21-year-old economics junior suited up in eight of the team's 10 league games, brought significant physicality, and was assessed only two penalty minutes.

Kerry Kane, a 20-year-old management freshman out of the Kahnawake Mohawks program, made the team as a walk-on, meriting rookie-of-the-year honours.  The six-foot, 175-pound midfielder scored five goals and added a pair of assists in six games played.
