CUFLA season awards announced

Most Valuable Player Nick Chaykowsky heads the list of season award winners for the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association's 2019 season.

The Trent University teachers college student was named a CUFLA East All-Canadian for his dominant two-way play as both one of the best offensive and defensive midfielders in the league. It was Chaykowsky's fifth time to be named an All Canadian in addition to being an honourable mention in his rookie season of 2014.

Chaykowsky (Bradford, Ont) was also named to the All Baggataway Cup team after leading Trent to the championship game. He finished top 10 in CUFLA in scoring, posting 18 goals and 11 assists for 29 points.

Cody Ward (St. Catharines, Ont) capped yet another outstanding season at Western by leading the Mustangs to their fourth straight Baggataway Cup championship. The attack was honoured as the top graduating player. Ward scored 256 career regular season points and added another 51 points in playoff action. Ward was appreciated by his coaches and teammates for much more than just his prolific scoring. He was always willing to play an off-ball roll if it opened up chances for his teammates, and Ward was known for his hard ride and determination going after ground balls.

Western goalie Michael Orlando (Toronto, Ont) was named the rookie of the year while Ryan Kent (Ottawa, Ont) from Queen's was named the top goaltender.

Another high-scoring season from Scott Dominey (Orangeville, Ont) landed the Nipissing Laker the midfielder of the year award.

A pair of Trent Excalibur stars took the top attack and defender awards. Adam Kitchen (Peterborough, Ont) was fourth in the league with 33 points, which included a team-high 19 goals. Curtis Conley (Ottawa, Ont) is the top defender after a sophomore season in which he raised his game from an already high level to make life difficult for opposing offensive players.

The Western Mustangs coaching staff, led by head coach Jeremy Tallevi, was awarded the coaching staff of the year honour after leading the team to its fourth straight Baggataway Cup.
