Trent Relies on Defence in Week 5 Win Over Bishop's

2022-10-11

Week 5 CUFLA action

The Trent Excalibur have been making waves with a potent offence in the 2022 CUFLA season, sitting at or near the top of the team scoring chart all fall. When it came to a Week 5 rematch against the only team that had beaten them, though, the Excalibur relied on goaltending and defence to exact a measure of revenge.

Bishop's dumped Trent 9-6 back on September 25 in Sherbrooke. When the Gaiters game to Peterborough on October 8, they again held the usually high-scoring Trent offence in check, allowing just 5 goals. Trent and their goalie Jackson Brown, however, were virtually unbeatable on the day en route to a 5-1 win.

Trent took the lead 3:45 into the game on a Cole Hanrahan goal which was matched by Jacob Gasperetti of Bishop's less than four minutes later. Little did any know, or suspect, that the Gaiters wouldn't score again.

Holden Lowes got what would prove to be the winning goal—on as assist from Taite Cattoni, who would help set up 3 of Trent's goals and added one himself—just over two minutes into the second quarter. That was it for scoring in the first half.

The third frame was a virtual tsunami of offence compared to the other periods: Hanrahan scored from Cattoni with about eight minutes to play and Cattoni buried Trent's fourth goal with eight seconds to play. A Dominic Millman marker with 2:30 left in the game rounded out the scoring in the defensive battle between the teams sitting atop CUFLA's East Division.

Week 5 Games

Oct 7

Guelph 12, Laurier 3
Box score
Guelph remained unbeaten after they scored as many goals in the first quarter as Laurier would manage through the whole game. Mitch Ogilvie, Jabe Verbeek and Nicholas Volkov each scored twice for the Gryphons, who moved to 5-0 ahead of games with Toronto and Brock upcoming in Week 6.

Western 7, Brock 6
Box score
Western scored the only 3 goals of the first quarter and Brock responded with the only pair in the second. The rest of the way, a pattern repeated when the Mustangs would forge a 2-goal lead then the Badgers would pull back within 1 but never quite manage to get the equalizer.

Queen's 10, Carleton 7
Box score
Queen's exploded for 4 goals to open the fourth quarter and erase a 6-5 deficit en route to their win over the Ravens. In an interesting note, each of the first three quarters saw a goal scored within the final 7 seconds.

Jack Faller and Reed Allen each had hat tricks to lead the Gaels while Carleton's Cameron York led all scorers with 4 points on 2 goals and 2 assists.

Trent 10, Nipissing 7
Box score
Trent spotted Nipissing the first goal of the game but scored three times in each of the first three quarters to pull away from the Lakers. Tyler Hendrycks had a hat trick for the Excalibur while Taite Cattoni led all scorers with a goal and 4 assists. Zach Tarr and Carter Tait each scored twice and added an assist for Nipissing.

October 8

McMaster 10, Laurentian 2
Box score
Mitchell Pellarin climbed near the top of the CUFLA goal-scoring chart (trailing only Trent's Cole Hanrahan) with his 5 spot in the Marauders' win. He scored twice in each of the first and third quarters to help Mac put up 4 goals in each of those frames. Michael Holmes scored both of Laurier's goals with Gavin Lang assisting on each.

Trent 5, Bishop's 1
Box score

Western 11, Toronto 6
Box score
After a quiet first quarter that saw the Mustangs lead 1-0, Western and the Varsity Blues scored 3 goals each in the second. Western extended the lead by outscoring Toronto 3-1 in the third, then Scott Del Zotto blew up with 4 straight goals to open the fourth quarter and put the game away for the Mustangs.

October 9

McGill 15, Nipissing 3
Box score
The Redbirds rebounded from a Week 4 loss to Carleton by putting together a complete game against the Lakers. McGill's scoring was spread out, with 10 different players contributing goals and no one tallying more than John Miraglia's 4 points on 2 goals and 2 assists. Alex Erbstein had a hat trick. Will Ferguson was the only Nipissing player to manage more than 1 point, having a goal and an assist.
