CUFLA Addresses Recent Quebec Announcement on Tuition

CUFLA (The Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association) addresses recent decision from the Quebec government:

CUFLA is aware of a recent decision by the Government of Quebec to substantially increase tuition for out of Province students. Currently CUFLA has two member schools residing in Quebec: Bishop’s University and McGill University. The impact of this decision on university athletics cannot be understated. As Canadian collegiate institutions compete to attract student athletes to their programs, this decision will have a profound impact on the ability of Quebec-based schools to compete.

“Our Quebec-based schools are immediately at a disadvantage when it comes to attracting student-athletes to their programs,” says incoming CUFLA Commissioner Scott Fox. “Cost is a major factor in considering post secondary options for most students. I am concerned that Quebec based institutions could be at a recruiting disadvantage. I’m also worried about the viability of their programs going forward. This decision is set to be implemented in September, 2024. I anticipate that it will seriously impact McGill and Bishops moving forward.”

CUFLA remains committed to keeping Canadian university athletics both competitive and affordable. We urge the Government of Quebec to hold further consultation with all stakeholders prior to the implementation of this policy in September, 2024.

About: CUFLA is the premier university field lacrosse league in Canada. Student-athletes from its teams have gone on to play professionally in both field and box lacrosse, have represented Canada and other nations at world championships in both disciplines. The top six teams will meet at the Baggataway Cup at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario November 3-5 to determine the 2023 CUFLA champion.
