MAC Stuns Trent in OT Sudden Death Thriller

2009-11-07

Junior Gavin Barrie of Peterborough, Ontario and freshmen Carter Williams of Scottsdale, Arizona score OT thrillers to send McMaster to the Bank of America Baggataway Cup final to face perennial power Brock University.

November 7, 2009 - Ottawa, Ontario - Trailing 5-1 at halftime of the Bank of America Baggataway Cup semifinal, McMaster University kept their heads and spirits high.  They had been in this position before in their quarterfinal matchup against 2008 champion the University of Guelph Gryphons, where they trailed 6-1 at half.

McMaster rallied to tie favourite & the CUFLA east #1 seed with 5 seconds to go in regulation time 8-8.  With overtime goals by Trent's Josh Wasson and Joe Stanley, McMaster's dreams of heading to the CUFLA finals seemed over.

McMasters's Carter Williams scored with 5 seconds remaining in the first overtime* pushing Trent into second overtime period, the second being of the sudden death variety.  Williams’ goal also drew a penalty, giving McMaster a man-up in sudden death.  Kevin MaCrory assisted Gavin Barrie's game wining goal to end Trent's '09 season and send McMaster to the CUFLA final for the first time since 1992.

In the other quarterfinal matchup, the McGill Redmen suffered a convincing  13-4 loss to perennial lacrosse power and 16-time champion Brock University.  The Badgers avenged last year’s 13-9 upset in the 2008 semifinals by McGill which kept the Brock Badgers out of the 2008 Bank of America Baggataway Cup championship.

McMaster will meet Brock at 1pm for the championship on Sunday, November 8th at Carleton's Ravens' Field.

*International Lacrosse Federation (ILF) rules state that the first overtime period is 8 minutes in length and is not sudden death.  Every overtime period thereafter is 4 minutes long and is sudden death.
