Western, Guelph Move On

2006-11-04

The University of Guelph Gryphons and The University of Western Ontario Mustangs move onto the semi-finals after winning their quarterfinal matches today.

In the first game, Guelph defeated the University of Toronto Varsity Blues by a score of 16 to 5.  Strong offensive play by attackmen Cam Monroe (5 goals, 2 assists) and Brian Rea ( 6 goals, 1 assisst) proved too much for the Blues, who couldn’t fight their way out of a 6 goal deficit at the end of the first quarter.  A valiant effort , led by  Toronto’s midfielder Ian Parrag ( 3 goals) helped to close the gap to 4 goals near the end of the second quarter, but Guelph’s offense came alive in the second half to secure the victory.

A tough second match saw the University of Western Ontario defeat McMaster University by a score of 11 to 5.  This tough, penalty filled game had the Mustangs leading by a narrow 4 to 3 lead at half.  Costly penalties by McMaster and timely power play goals in the second half gave Western the momentum to ensure their place in the semi-finals.  Strong performances for each team were turned in by McMaster’s midfielder Matt Morgan (2 goals) and Western’s attackman Brent Yost (1 goal, 4 assists).

Western will meet #1 ranked Bishop’s University at 5 pm in the first semi-final, while traditional rivals Brock and Guelph will face-off at 8 pm.
