CUFLA playoff picture clears up on Saturday

The Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association’s post-season picture becomes clearer this Saturday as four playdown games will determine the league’s final playoff berths.

In the western conference, No. 5 Laurentian University (3-7) is at the University of Guelph at 1 p.m ET. CUFLA leading scorer Eric Hubert and the Gryphons (8-2) are the top-ranked team in the west.

The No. 2 Brock University Badgers (8-2) will host the fourth-ranked McMaster University Marauders (4-6) at 2 p.m. ET. McMaster’s Carter Williams led the league in goals scored with 34.

Carleton University (3-7) – the fourth seed in the eastern conference – will travel to the University of Toronto (6-4) to take on the third-ranked Varsity Blues at 3 p.m. ET.

Finally, No. 5 Trent University (3-7) will take on the Bishop’s University Gaiters in Lennoxville, Que., at 7 p.m. ET. The Gaiters (9-1) have the second-best record in their division. Trent’s Niall Caravello had the most assists in CUFLA, dishing out 33 in 10 games.

Two of CUFLA’s final six playoff teams have already been determined. The University of Western Ontario Mustangs have earned a bye as host of the playoff tournament. The McGill University Redmen (9-1) earned a spot in the final four with the best overall record in the league.

The Baggataway Cup tournament will be played Nov. 4-6 on Western’s campus in London, Ont. The CUFLA championship game will be played on Nov. 6^th at TD Waterhouse Stadium at 1 p.m. ET.
