University of Toronto: World Champions

Although CUFLA has been in existence for 26 years, the roots of intercollegiate field lacrosse in Canada go back much further.  The University of Toronto first started playing field lacrosse in 1892 when the University of Toronto Lacrosse Club was formed.  That spring, the Varsity Blues played local club teams as well as Cornell University, winning 11-3.  The next spring U of T played Stevens Institute, Cornell and LeHigh for the North American Intercollegiate Championship.  The Blues won all three games and the championship. 

Over the next 37 years U of T toured the U. S. playing such schools as Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Hobart, University of Pennsylvania, University of Detroit, Syracuse, Swathmore and the U. S. Naval Academy.  The Varsity Blues were crowned intercollegiate champions in 1893, 1897, 1902, 1903, 1907 and 1908.  The games were discontinued after 1930 as it was becoming increasingly difficult to get a team together and get sufficient practice in order to meet the American teams.
