Freshmen Klares Nets Winner as Redmen Defeat Excalibur

KINGSTON - Freshman Richie Klares of Warrenton, Virginia, scored a hat-trick, including the game-winner with 2:25 remaining as McGill rallied from a three-goal deficit to edge the Trent University Excalibur 10-9 in the CUFLA men's lacrosse season opener at Kingston, Ont., Saturday.

Trent led 3-2 after the opening quarter and 6-3 at the half before McGill mounted their comeback to outscore the Excalibur 4-3 in the third stanza and 3-0 in the last quarter.

Klares sparked the rally with the opening marker just 35 seconds into the second half. He saved his best for last, however, scoring at 10:33 of the final quarter, narrowing the gap to 9-8. The he struck for his third marker seven minutes later to break the 9-9 tie that was forced by Ryan Besse of Aurora, Ont., with less than four minutes remaining.

Leland de Langley of Orangeville, Ont., and Alex Rohrbach of Princeton Junction, N.J., added two goals apiece for the Redmen, along with singles from rookies Drew Laird of Chittenden, Vt., and Tayler Sipperly of Charlotte, N.C. De Langley also collected a pair of assists.

For Trent, Jon Hiltz and Josh Gilray each netted hat-tricks in a losing cause. Tyler Tanguay added two goals and Jordan Hill rounded out the scoring.

Goaltender Riley McGillis of Peterborough, Ont., was credited with the win between the pipes for McGill, while Kalvin Thomas was saddled with the loss.
