The Western University Mustangs Men’s Lacrosse opened the 2012 season in convincing style, dumping the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 13-5 in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association (CUFLA) on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 9).

Playing host to Toronto at TD Waterhouse Stadium, the Mustangs were not long in taking control of the game when Ryan McCrory tagged his first of two goals just over a minute into the game.

The Varsity Blues would draw even once again on an unassisted marker by Cory Wright nearing the midway point of the first quarter but that would be as close as they would get from that point on.

Two more goals for Western in the first quarter and five in the second put Western firmly in the drivers seat, holding an 8-1 lead at the half.

Toronto drew first blood in the second half on a power-play goal by Jordan Robertson only to have that gain cancelled out in short order by Mustangs’ Dylan Ham, notching his second and third goals of the game.

Trading markers through the fourth quarter, Western put the period behind the final score with Mike McKegney’s goal with 12 seconds left on the clock.

Other Mustangs goals came from Shane Snider, Taylor Rivers, Brenden MacDougall, Sam Neeb, Doug Utting, Sean Frankland and Jordi Jones-Smith.

The Western Mustangs are on the road for their next five games and won’t hit home turf at TD Waterhouse Stadium again until Sept. 30 when they take on the Guelph Gryphons.
