Western Winning West, Bishop’s Beating East

Freshmen Attackman Ryan McCrory of Western and Sophomore Gareth Gibson of Bishop’s each scored 6 points and helped maintain their school’s perfect record as Western beat Brock 11-10 on Saturday, while Bishop’s beat McGill 11-10 in Lennoxville, QC.

ST. CATHARINES, Ont.- The Brock University men's lacrosse team (4-1 CUFLA) lost their first game of the regular season by the score of 11-10 against the Western Mustangs (6-0 CUFLA) at Badgers Homecoming Saturday afternoon.

The game was tied 5-5 at the half. In the opening five minutes of the third quarter, Western answered with three straight goals from Dylan Ham, Ryan McCrory and Scott Watson to take an 8-5 lead. 

Brock sophomore Greg Davidson (Toronto, Ont.) answered with the next two goals to bring the score within one, 8-7, with seven minutes left in the third quarter.

With just under five minutes left in the third, the Mustangs Sam Neeb would bury a shot past Brock goaltender Ian Duffy (Ajax, Ont.) to make it 9-7 after 60 minutes.

Early in the fourth quarter, Duffy would come up with two big saves to keep the game 9-7. At the 13-minute mark, Brock's Travis Gibbons (Owen Sound, Ont.) would beat Mustangs goalie Zach Grace to make it a one-goal game 9-8. With six minutes left, Dustin Dunn (Peterborough , Ont.) would find Davidson who buried it past Grace tying the game 9-9.

Western would regain their two-goal lead as McCrory and Watson added goals at 3:51 and 1:48 to make it 11-9.

Less than a minute later, Brock would answer right back as Dunn scored to make it 11-10 with one minute left in regulation.  

After some defensive pressure, Brock would get the ball back with less than 30 seconds but were unable to capitalize, dropping their first game of 2012.

Brock was led by Davidson (4G,1A) and Dunn (3G, 2A). Gibbons contributed with two goals and two assists. Senior Jordan Weedmark (Carleton Place, Ont.) rounded out the Badgers scoring adding one goal.

For Western, McCrory tallied four goals and two assists in the win. Watson (3G), Ham (2G, 1A) and Kyle Childerhose (3A) all recorded three points each. Neeb and Ryan Linthorne, chipped in with one goal each.

In goal, Duffy collected 14 saves on 25 shots in the loss. Grace turned aside 11 of 21 shots he faced for his league leading sixth victory.
