McGill wins bid to host 2013 Canadian lacrosse championship, Nov. 1-3

2013-05-09

MONTREAL – The McGill University Redmen, who captured their first-ever Baggataway Cup as Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association champs last fall, have won a bid to host the 2013 CUFLA national championship, Nov. 1-3.

It will mark the first time that McGill has won a bid to host the six-team event, although the University previously hosted part of the 2005 tourney when a snowstorm in Lennoxville, Que., forcing one semifinal game to be moved to the McGill campus.

The 13-member league, which includes three Quebec-based teams and 10 from Ontario, voted 9-2 in favour of McGill's bid, with two abstentions.

“We're thrilled to host the tournament,” said McGill head coach Tim Murdoch, a native of Princeton, N.J., and a long-time resident of Westmount, Que., who guided his troops to a 16-2-1 overall record in his 10th season behind the Redmen bench.  “Lacrosse was founded in Quebec, has grown by leaps and bounds over the last decade and it is here to stay. We are honoured that the CUFLA chose McGill as the host site and plan to run a first-class event.”

The six-team format will feature five games within 48 hours – two quarter-finals on a Friday night (Nov. 1), two semifinals on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 2) and the Baggataway Cup final on Sunday (Nov. 3). The first two games are scheduled to be held on the artificial surface at Forbes Field, located beside the student residences, while the remaining contests are slated for Molson Stadium.
