The McGill Redmen continue to sit atop In Lacrosse We Trust's CUFLA Power Rankings, followed by a trio of teams from the West Division.Courtesy Patty Gregoire, In Lacrosse We Trust
1. McGill (9-0) Last Week: 1
The defending Baggataway Cup champions remain undefeated after two convincing victories over Carleton (16-3) and Queen’s (14-8) to improve their record to 9-0. The Redmen kicked off their weekend with a road victory over the Carleton Ravens at Keith Harris Stadium in Ottawa,ON. A balanced offense led the Redmen to victory as four players registered a pair of goals, with twelve players in total found the back of the net. University of Vermont transfer Tayler Slipperly added two goals and a helper while Lehigh grad Kevin Donnovan picked up a lone marker and two assists. McGill netminders were busy in the victory as three goalies saw action Saturday. Junior Riley McGillis started the game and played 40 minutes en route of picking up his fifth win of the season. Sophomore Jamie Spagnuolo and freshmen William Waesche each played 20 minutes. All three goaltenders let in a goal each. The following night the Redmen hosted the Queen’s Golden Gaels in a 14-8 home victory. Donavan capped off his solid weekend with a seven point performance (5G,2A). Captains Alex Rohrbach and Nolan Prinzen each tallied three points in the victory. Peterborough,ON netminder McGillis picked up another win bringing his total to a league best six victories.
2.Brock (8-1) Last Week: 2
The Brock Badgers solidified their sole spot of first place in the West Division after two home victories this past weekend. The Badgers kicked off the weekend with a 14-6 victory over University of Toronto. Freshman attackman Brandon Slade continued his outstanding rookie campaign with four goals and three assists for a solid seven points. Senior attackman Kyle Davis added a pair of goals and three helpers for five points while junior Greg Davidson found the back of the cage four times and sophomore midfielder Gage Board four points. Badgers netminders Ian Duffy and Ryan Jones split the game. The Ajax, ON native Duffy registered the win while making six saves on eight shots, while Jones made three saves on seven shots. The next day the Badgers picked up where they last left off with a 15-4 victory over McMaster. Once again the duo of Davis and Slade were unstoppable posting 11 points between the two. Board chipped in offensively once again with four points from the midfield. Faceoff specialist Kyle Kropman and Jake Lambert were once again stellar, winning a large percentage off all draws as they split duties all weekend. Kropman even got involved in the offense, dishing out two helpers. Duffy was great between the pipes once again as he made 15 saves en route to picking up his fifth win of the year and is one win away from his career high of six wins in a season. The Badgers will look to extend their winning streak next weekend as they travel to Toronto to take on the Varsity Blues on Saturday(10/12) and host the Laurier Goldenhawks on Sunday afternoon (10/13).
3. Guelph (7-1) Last Week: 3
The Guelph Gryphons didn’t see much action this week, with only a lone 14-7 midweek victory against the Laurier Golden Hawks. Leading the way for Guelph was the dynamic duo of Jordan Critch and Ryan Serville. The Pickering,ON native Serville finished the night with five goals and one helper while the Buffalo Bandits’ Critch found the back of the cage once while adding a solid seven helpers. Of the five Serville markers, four came off of Critch assists. Guelph has a huge match up this Friday in London,ON as they take on the Western Mustangs. The Gryphons got the better half of the Mustangs in the first game of the season when Guelph picked up an 8-7 victory. The Gryphons will also host Laurentian this Sunday in Guelph,ON at noon.
4. Western (7-2) Last Week: 4
The Mustangs had a busy yet productive weekend as they picked up three wins, a pair against Laurentian and one against Toronto, outscoring their opponents 33-17. Chestnut Hill College graduate Shane Morlock led the way for the Mustangs with five goals and five helpers. The Whitby,ON native leads the team in assists with 12 and is in second in points with 23, just two shy of team leader Ryan McCrory. Netminder Zach Grace played each game, bringing his record to 6-2 while posting a solid 5.11 goals against average. The Mustangs will look to climb into second place in the west as they host the Guelph Gryphons this Friday night.
5. Bishop’s (5-2) Last Week: 5
The Bishop’s Gaiters extended their winning streak to three this past Monday night as they knocked off the Concordia Stingers 25-3. Sophomore Ryan Dewar lead the way offensively for the Gaiters with a one goal, five assist, 6 points performance. Sophomore James Malloy, junior Alex Henderson and freshmen Cam Bateman each chipped in with five points while sophomore Rhett Handley and freshmen Simon Winquist added four.
