Guelph and Brock Set Up Head to Head Showdown for First in West with Wins Over Western

At the end of the 2019 CUFLA regular season, the Western Mustangs lost two straight games—to Guelph and Brock. It worked out fine for Western in that case, as they went on to win their fourth straight Baggataway Cup two weeks later, so the Mustangs probably won't panic after dropping games to Brock and Guelph again in Week 5 of the 2021 season. It certainly appears to make the route to a fifth straight title more difficult, though.

With Guelph beating Laurier Tuesday night in an early first game of Week 6, it is now impossible for Western to finish first in CUFLA West, meaning if they are to repeat yet again they'll have to once again go through the Friday quarterfinals on Baggataway Cup weekend, November 5-7 at Nipissing University in North Bay.

CUFLA West Week 5 Results

McMaster 9, Laurier 8 OT
Box score
The Golden Hawks made things a lot harder on McMaster this time. In the teams' first meeting of the year, the Marauders romped 13-3. This time around, Laurier sprinted to a 3-0 lead and was up 8-3 through three quarters.

Then Mitchell Pellarin took control. Already having scored twice through the first 60 minutes, Pellarin added another three in an 11-minute span of the fourth to pull Mac back within one, then Vinny Millantoni tied things up with three minutes to play in regulation time.

It should come as no surprise that Pellarin was hero in overtime, scoring the only goal of the extra frames to allow McMaster to win their second game of the season.

Guelph 8, Western 6
Box score
The Gryphons set up a Week 6 showdown with Brock for first place in CUFLA West with their low-scoring win over Western. The teams tied three of the game's four quarters, with each scoring three times in the first, once in the third and twice in the fourth.

That made the second quarter decisive; Guelph's Thomas Whitty and Mitch Ogilvie scored the only goals in that frame.

CUFLA East Week 5 Results

Bishop's 19, Ottawa 5
Box score
Bishop's game story
Bishop's left no doubt they want to finish atop the East and put themselves in strong position to do so by trouncing Ottawa in each team's penultimate game of the regular season. Sam Firth leads CUFLA in goals and points after posting 4 and 2, respectively, while Jacob Gasperetti moved well up in the scoring race with a huge game of 5 goals and 4 assists.

Queen's 9, Carleton 7
Box score
Queen's retained a chance at first in the East by edging the Ravens, although they will have a big hill to climb when they head to Sherbrooke in Week 6. Having lost the first matchup between the teams 16-7, Queen's would need to beat the Gaiters by 10 to clinch the top spot.

Carleton hung tough with Queen's all game. The Ravens took a 2-0 lead, led 3-2 after the first quarter and wouldn't go away, scoring a pair of goals in each of the third and fourth quarters to keep things close. Seven different players scored for the Gaels while Cameron York, Colin Gallagher and Thomas Reidy had a pair each for Carleton.

CUFLA Central Week 5 Results

Trent 18, Laurentian 4
Box score
Trent had already clinched top spot in CUFLA Central, but they played like they still had something to prove in hammering Laurentian in the lone Week 5 game in the division. The first quarter was close, with Michael Holmes first of 3 goals pulling the Voyageurs within 3-2 a minute and a half from the end of the frame, but with a 6-0 advantage for the Excalibur in the second quarter the rout was on.

Some of Trent's leading scorers coming into the game had fairly quiet nights, but with everyone getting a chance to play their secondary threats proved they are dangerous as well. Jack McAlpine had 5 goals and an assist, Dominic Millman and Cole Hanrahan each scored hat tricks, and defender Curtis Romanchych added 2 goals and 3 assists for the Excalibur.
