The 2021 CUFLA regular season wrapped up with Week 6 games that saw two teams finish undefeated atop their divisions while a third had to win in the last game of the regular season to take the West.

The Trent Excalibur and Bishop's Gaiters finished off unbeaten seasons with Week 6 wins, ensuring that they will be the top two seeds heading straight to the Baggataway Cup semifinals if they are able to take care of business on CUFLA's playoff weekend, while the Brock Badgers took first in the West Division with an emphatic statement win, downing the Guelph Gryphons 18-6 in the final game of the 2021 regular season.

CUFLA Central Week 6 Results

Trent 13, Toronto 8
Box score
Trent had won each of their first five games by at least 7 goals, outscoring their opponents by a total of 86-22, so the bigger surprise than the Excalibur winning may have been the Varsity Blues sticking within 5 goals. Toronto was tenacious, though, refusing to fade after the Excalibur had blanked them 3-0 through the first quarter. Toronto outscored Trent 3-2 in the second quarter and when Davis Bottomley opened second-half scoring less than two minutes into the third quarter, the Blues were within one at 5-4.

Then Jack McAlpine did what he has gotten used to doing as the season has progressed—he got hot and led the Excalibur on a run. McAlpine scored three times in the third quarter as Trent regained control of the game. His 5 goals on the day gave him 21 on the season, good for the Trent lead and second in CUFLA only to Bishop's' Sam Firth.

Taite Cattoni added a hat trick and an assist for Trent. Alex Acosta scored three times for Toronto while five other players added single goals.

Nipissing 19, Laurentian 5
Box score
In Nipissing's final game before they play host to the Baggataway Cup November 5-7, the Lakers had a pair of players each match the Voyageurs total with 5 goals—Bo Peltier and Zach Tarr each managed the feat. Michael Holmes led Laurentian with 3 goals; for the season he produced over half of the Voyageurs' offence, scoring 9 of their 16 total goals.

CUFLA West Week 6 Results

Brock 18, Guelph 6
Brock appears to be improving by leaps and bounds from week to week. The Badgers edged Guelph 10-8 on October 3 then got dumped 15-8 by Western five days later. In the rematches, which came close on the heels of the first games in this compressed season, Brock Brock turned the tables on Western with a 13-8 win over the Mustangs on October 14 then dominated the Gryphons in the season finale on Sunday, October 24.

Western 10, McMaster 9
Box score
This was a surprising result in light of Western's 21-5 win over the Marauders in the teams' previous meeting, in Hamilton back on September 29. The Mustangs clearly didn't come ready to play on their home turf on Friday and credit to McMaster for making the most of their opportunity to compete with the four-time defending champions.

Mac scored the first two goals of the game, led 3-2 after 20 minutes, then dominated the second quarter to the tune of 4-0, giving them a 7-2 lead at half time. Jack Accursi got the tide turning for the Mustangs, scoring the first 3 goals of the third quarter to close the margin. Still, thanks to Brian Huyghue scoring once in the third and once in the fourth (he finished with 4 goals in total), McMaster held a 9-8 lead with five minutes to play in the game.

Julian Simeoni and Pierson Noble connected within a minute and a half span for the goals that finally pushed Western ahead and the Mustangs held on for the final three minutes to squeak out the victory.

Guelph 12, Laurier 6
Box score
Guelph never trailed but had to fight off a valiant comeback effort from Laurier in the Gryphons win in Waterloo last Tuesday.

Guelph got out to a 4-0 lead and led 8-2 at halftime, but got goals from Owen Lane, Ben Penny-Perreault and Aiden Marroni in the first half of the third quarter to creep closer. Connor Watson had opened the game's scoring and now he responded to the Laurier run by potting back-to-back goals by the end of the third quarter to solidify Guelph's lead.

Bishop's game story
Lacrosse is a game of runs and that was evident in some of the swings in Week 6 CUFLA games, perhaps none more so than at Coulter Field as the home Gaiters wrapped up their undefeated season.

Bishop's led 4-0 after 20 minutes and 7-1 at halftime, looking like they had things very much in control. It looked like more of the same when league league goals and points leader Sam Firth scored just 47 seconds into the third quarter.

But then the Gaels caught fire for the rest of the period, connecting for five straight goals to make a game of it. Bishop's responded with a 4-2 final quarter to close things out.

Ottawa 9, Carleton 8
Box score
Saturday's game was particularly meaningful for Ottawa, as the Gee-Gees were honouring fallen former teammate Isaac Lavallee

The game itself was tight throughout. For all but five of the game's 80 minutes the teams were either tied or one team was leading by a single goal.

Seamus O'Donnell had a hat trick to lead Ottawa with six other players adding singles. Colin Gallagher was the top gun for the Ravens with 4 goals and an assist while Thomas Reidy contributed a hat trick and Jacob Garcia three assists.
